A patio starts with a well-drained slab or paver base, built by our concrete and hardscape crew. Add a patio cover and you get shade through summer afternoons. Attached covers connect to the house with a ledger and proper flashing. Freestanding covers need their own footings. Either way, most cities want plans and a permit, and we take care of both.
Decks built to last
Decks on hillside lots can turn an unusable slope into the best spot on the property. Raised decks need engineered footings, rated hardware, and guardrails that meet code. Composite decking holds up to sun with little upkeep, while wood offers a natural look. In fire hazard zones, decking materials may be restricted, and KR confirms what is allowed at your address.

Porches that tie an ADU to the yard
A small covered porch gives a backyard ADU a real front door and a place to sit. It also helps a unit feel private from the main house. We design porches and paths together, often with a fence or gate to define the space. For a front porch on the main house, the update can anchor a larger exterior renovation.

Do I need a permit for a patio cover in Los Angeles?
In most cases, yes. Patio covers are structures, and the City of Los Angeles and most other cities require plans and a permit, especially for attached covers. Setback and size rules also apply, and KR confirms them for your lot.
Does a deck need a permit in California?
Most decks do. Small, low, freestanding decks may be exempt under some codes, but raised decks, attached decks, and decks that serve an exit door typically need a permit. Local rules vary, so we check your city's requirements before design.
Is composite decking better than wood?
Composite decking resists fading, splintering, and rot, and it needs little maintenance beyond cleaning. Wood usually costs less up front and has a natural feel but needs regular sealing. Both work well when the framing underneath is built correctly.
Can you build a deck on a sloped hillside lot?
Yes. Hillside decks are built on engineered footings and posts sized for the slope and soil. They usually need structural plans and a permit, and fire zone material rules may apply in hillside neighborhoods.
