Concrete & Hardscape in Los Angeles and Orange County

KR Building & Remodeling Inc. pours driveways, walkways, and patios, builds retaining walls, installs pavers, and forms foundations and slabs for ADUs and additions in Los Angeles County and Orange County. We handle grading, drainage, and permits where required.

Good concrete starts below the surface. Soil prep, base, reinforcement, and drainage decide whether a slab stays flat or cracks in a year. KR is a licensed California general contractor (CSLB #1127167) with over 10 years of construction experience. We build flatwork and foundations the same careful way, whether it is a front walk or the slab under a new backyard unit.

C-105.1

Driveways, walkways, and pavers

A cracked, lifted driveway is a tripping hazard and often a drainage problem. We remove the old slab, correct the base and slope so water runs away from the house, and pour with the right thickness and reinforcement. Pavers are a good alternative when you want a softer look or easier repairs down the road. We lay them over a compacted base with edge restraint so they stay put.

C-105.2

Foundations and slabs for ADUs

Every detached ADU sits on a foundation built from engineered plans. We lay out the footings, set the forms and rebar, coordinate utility sleeves for plumbing and electrical, and call for inspection before the pour. The same applies to home additions. A square, level foundation saves time on every trade that follows.

Retaining walls and sloped lots

Hillside and sloped lots often need retaining walls to create usable yard space or protect a building pad. Taller walls, and walls that hold back a surcharge like a driveway or structure, generally need engineering and a permit. We build to those plans with proper drainage behind the wall. Pair hardscape with a new patio or deck and the yard becomes part of the house.

FAQ

Concrete & Hardscape FAQ

Do I need a permit to replace my driveway in Los Angeles?

Replacing a driveway on private property often does not need a building permit, but work at the curb cut or in the public right of way usually needs a separate permit from the city. Rules vary by city, and KR confirms what applies before we start.

How thick should a concrete driveway be?

Residential driveways are commonly poured about 4 inches thick, with more thickness where heavier vehicles park. Base preparation and reinforcement matter as much as thickness. We size the slab for how you use it.

Do retaining walls need a permit?

Many California cities require a permit and engineering for retaining walls above a certain height, or for any wall that supports a slope, driveway, or building. Short garden walls often do not. We check your city's thresholds during the estimate.

Are pavers better than concrete?

Pavers cost more to install but are easy to repair because individual units can be lifted and reset. Poured concrete is typically less expensive and makes a continuous surface. The right choice depends on your look, budget, and site drainage.

Can you pour the foundation for an ADU someone else designed?

Yes, as long as there are approved engineered plans. We build the foundation to the drawings and coordinate inspections. Most homeowners find it simpler when KR manages the full ADU build so the foundation and framing are handled by one team.
